Uganda has started human trials for a new vaccine aimed at combating the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola. The Phase I trial, led by the Medical Research Council and the Uganda Virus Research Institute in collaboration with the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, will assess the vaccine's safety and immune response in healthy adults.
The vaccine, named ChAdOx1 BDBV, is designed to target the Bundibugyo virus, which has caused outbreaks in the past. Researchers will monitor participants for any adverse reactions and measure their immune responses. The trial is part of ongoing efforts to develop effective treatments for Ebola.
This trial follows previous outbreaks of the Bundibugyo virus in Uganda, which highlighted the need for better prevention tools. The country has a history of dealing with Ebola, including the 2007 outbreak that led to significant public health measures. The new vaccine could offer a critical step in protecting communities from future outbreaks.
