Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has publicly endorsed President William Ruto’s bid for a second term in Kenya, according to a statement released on October 3, 2026. The support comes amid ongoing political tensions between the two East African nations.
The statement, shared on Muhoozi’s X account, was in response to a warning issued by Saboti Member of Parliament Caleb Amisi. Amisi had previously cautioned Muhoozi against interfering in Kenya’s internal politics, following reports of Ugandan military involvement in Kenyan affairs. This latest move by Muhoozi appears to be a direct rebuttal to Amisi’s concerns.
Muhoozi named Moses Wetang’ula as his envoy to Kenya, a decision that has raised eyebrows among Kenyan political circles. Wetang’ula, a former Kenyan intelligence official, has been linked to past disputes involving Ugandan military operations in Kenya. The choice of envoy has been seen as a strategic move to strengthen ties between the two nations while also asserting Uganda’s influence.
This is not the first time Muhoozi has expressed support for Ruto. In 2025, he had previously criticized Kenya’s handling of cross-border security, leading to diplomatic friction. The current endorsement, however, marks a more explicit alignment with Ruto’s political agenda.
The situation reflects broader regional tensions, with both nations navigating complex diplomatic and security relationships. Kenya has long maintained a cautious stance toward Ugandan military involvement in its internal matters, while Uganda has sought to assert its regional influence. The latest developments may further complicate an already delicate balance.
