Uganda has begun human trials for a new vaccine targeting the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola virus. The Phase I trial is being conducted by the Medical Research Council, Uganda Virus Research Institute, and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.
The trial involves a small group of healthy volunteers and aims to assess the vaccine's safety and immune response. Researchers hope the vaccine will provide protection against the Bundibugyo virus, which has caused outbreaks in the past. The study is part of broader efforts to develop effective treatments for Ebola.
The Bundibugyo virus is a rare but highly lethal strain of Ebola. Previous outbreaks linked to this virus have resulted in high mortality rates. Uganda has a history of responding to Ebola outbreaks, including the 2017-2018 outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which had a significant impact on neighboring countries. The new vaccine trial represents a step forward in the global fight against Ebola.
