The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has issued a formal notice demanding Sh623.4 million in unpaid taxes from former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko. The amount includes Sh308.9 million in principal tax, Sh15.8 million in penalties, and Sh298.7 million in interest.
The notice was issued by KRA, which has directed Sonko to clear the outstanding arrears. The total sum represents the accumulated tax debt, including interest and penalties, that Sonko has not settled. The KRA has taken formal steps to recover the funds, indicating a legal process is underway.
Sonko, who previously served as governor of Nairobi, is now being pursued for unpaid taxes. This follows previous reports of tax evasion allegations against him. The KRA’s action highlights the agency’s efforts to enforce tax compliance, even against former public officials. The case underscores the ongoing challenges in ensuring tax accountability in Kenya.
