The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has issued a formal notice to former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko, demanding payment of Sh623.4 million in unpaid taxes. The amount includes Sh308.9 million in principal tax, Sh15.8 million in penalties, and Sh298.7 million in interest.
The notice was issued by the KRA, which is now requiring Sonko to settle the outstanding arrears. The total sum represents a significant financial obligation, with the interest portion alone exceeding Sh298 million. The KRA has directed Sonko to clear the debt, which has been outstanding for some time.
This marks the latest action by the KRA in pursuing unpaid tax liabilities. Sonko, who previously held public office, is now being held accountable for his financial obligations. The move reflects the authority’s ongoing efforts to enforce tax compliance, even among former officials. The case highlights the KRA’s commitment to ensuring all taxpayers, regardless of their status, meet their legal obligations.
