Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Matiang’i has joined forces with Bishop Margaret Wanjiru in Nairobi’s upcoming gubernatorial race, signaling a significant political alliance ahead of the 2027 elections. Matiang’i expressed readiness to support Wanjiru as she campaigns across the capital.
Nairobi City County Chief Officer Geoffrey Mosiria met with Matiang’i following the latter’s announcement of support for Wanjiru’s gubernatorial bid. The meeting came after Mosiria had declared his own candidacy for the position. The two officials discussed strategies to build public support for Wanjiru’s campaign.
This development marks a notable shift in Nairobi’s political landscape, with high-profile figures aligning behind Wanjiru. The gubernatorial race is expected to be highly competitive, with multiple candidates vying for the position. Wanjiru, a prominent religious leader, has been gaining traction in recent months through grassroots engagement. Matiang’i’s endorsement adds credibility to her campaign, particularly in areas where his previous administrative experience is seen as an asset.
The 2027 elections will be the first time Nairobi elects a governor directly, as the city’s status as a county was finalized in 2019. This change has led to increased political activity and a more competitive electoral environment. Wanjiru’s campaign is one of several major contenders, with others including Mosiria and other local leaders. The race is seen as a test of political strength in Kenya’s largest city.
