Nairobi County Chief Officer Geoffrey Mosiria has announced his candidacy for governor in the 2027 election, vowing to challenge incumbent Governor Johnson Sakaja. Mosiria, who currently oversees county operations, cited his experience in health, environment, and customer service as key to his campaign. He pledged to improve public services and complete ongoing projects.
Mosiria’s declaration comes as Sakaja faces pressure over waste management and flood preparedness. Nairobi collected 100,000 tonnes of garbage in a single month, part of efforts to manage the impact of El Niño. The governor praised joint preparations and launched a six-point flood response plan. Despite these efforts, local leaders and residents remain concerned about the city’s infrastructure and service delivery.
This is not the first time Mosiria has expressed interest in running for governor. He previously announced his bid and reiterated his commitment to addressing Nairobi’s challenges. Sakaja, who has led the city since 2021, has faced criticism over slow progress on key projects and public service delivery. The 2027 election is expected to be a major political contest, with both candidates vying for control of the city’s administration.
The race highlights growing political tensions in Nairobi, where governance and service quality remain key issues. With the city’s population continuing to expand, the outcome of the election could shape the future of Nairobi’s development and management.
