A Kenyan citizen living in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has died in Nairobi after contracting Ebola, marking Kenya’s first confirmed case of the virus. Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale confirmed the death on Tuesday, stating the patient received supportive treatment before passing away.

The patient had traveled from the DRC through Uganda before arriving in Nairobi. Duale emphasized that the case was identified through routine health monitoring and that authorities are now conducting contact tracing. No other cases have been reported yet, and the patient’s condition was classified as severe upon arrival.

This is the first documented case of Ebola in Kenya. The virus, which is transmitted through direct contact with bodily fluids, has been spreading in the DRC and neighboring countries. Kenya’s health officials have been preparing for such an eventuality, including stockpiling medical supplies and training healthcare workers.

Ebola outbreaks in the region have caused significant public health concerns in the past. The DRC has experienced multiple outbreaks, with the most recent one beginning in 2024. Kenya’s confirmation of a case raises alarms about the potential for the virus to spread further.

The government has not yet announced any travel restrictions or additional measures, but officials are monitoring the situation closely. Public health experts warn that early detection and rapid response are crucial in containing the virus.
