Employers in Kenya will face fines of up to one million shillings under a new law aimed at protecting breastfeeding mothers. The Breastfeeding Mothers Bill, 2024, mandates that employers provide private lactation rooms, allow reasonable breastfeeding breaks, and offer flexible working arrangements.

The law requires workplaces to ensure a private space for nursing, with access to clean water and a comfortable chair. Employers must also adjust work schedules to accommodate breastfeeding needs. Failure to comply could result in significant financial penalties.

The legislation follows years of advocacy by women’s rights groups and health organizations. Previous efforts had focused on raising awareness about the importance of breastfeeding for both mother and child. This new law marks a formal step toward institutionalizing support for nursing mothers in the workplace.
