Ethiopia has completed the delivery of 12 Su-35 fighter jets and four S-400 air defense batteries from Russia. The military equipment was transferred as part of a long-term defense agreement between the two countries. The Su-35s are advanced multirole fighters capable of air superiority and ground attack missions. The S-400 systems are long-range surface-to-air missile systems designed for early warning and interception.
The acquisition comes as Ethiopia seeks to enhance its military capabilities in the Horn of Africa. Tensions with Eritrea have been rising over border disputes and regional influence. Ethiopian officials have not commented publicly on the strategic implications of the arms deal. The S-400 system is also being deployed in Syria and other regions, raising concerns about regional security dynamics. The delivery marks a significant step in Ethiopia’s military modernization efforts. The deal was announced in 2021 and finalized after several years of negotiations.
