Ethiopia has completed the delivery of 12 Su-35 fighter jets and four S-400 air defence systems from Russia. The military equipment was transferred as part of a long-term arms deal signed in 2021. The Su-35s are multirole fighter jets capable of air superiority and ground attack missions. The S-400 systems are advanced long-range air defence units.

The acquisition comes amid heightened military tensions between Ethiopia and Eritrea. Recent border clashes and disputed border areas have led to increased military posturing. Ethiopian officials have not commented publicly on the strategic implications of the new equipment. The S-400 systems are believed to enhance Ethiopia’s ability to monitor and defend its airspace.

This is the second major military procurement by Ethiopia from Russia in less than a year. In 2023, Ethiopia also received a shipment of Russian-made tanks and artillery systems. The growing military cooperation with Russia has raised concerns among regional observers. The Ethiopian government has maintained that its military purchases are for national defense and regional stability.
