Safaricom has increased the number of Kenyans eligible to borrow on Fuliza to 18.1 million as of March 2026. The telco’s 2026 Sustainable Business Report reveals that the borrowing base grew from seven million to 18.1 million over the past year.

The expansion includes 11 million new customers who previously had no credit limit. Safaricom now offers M-PESA overdraft services to these users, allowing them to borrow up to their transaction limits. The move comes as merchant loans have become more challenging to recover, prompting the company to adjust its credit policies.

This change reflects broader trends in Kenya’s financial sector, where mobile money services are increasingly used for credit access. The report does not specify the exact amount of credit extended or the interest rates applied. However, it highlights a shift toward more inclusive financial services, targeting a wider segment of the population.

Safaricom has long been a leader in Kenya’s digital payments landscape. The expansion of Fuliza underscores its ongoing efforts to support small businesses and individuals through flexible lending options. The company has not provided further details on how it plans to manage the increased risk associated with a larger borrower base.

The decision follows a period of economic uncertainty, with many Kenyans relying on mobile money platforms for daily transactions. By increasing access to credit, Safaricom aims to enhance financial inclusion while adapting to evolving market conditions.
