Kenyan officials have escalated diplomatic pressure on Nigeria over its visa policies, following widespread public frustration. Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’Oei condemned the treatment of Kenyans applying for Nigerian visas, calling the process unacceptable. The dispute intensified after a viral social media post highlighted the bureaucratic challenges Kenyans face when attempting to visit Nigeria.

The Kenyan government has vowed to pursue formal diplomatic and political solutions. Korir Sing’Oei emphasized the need for Nigeria to streamline its visa acquisition process, which has become a point of contention between the two neighboring nations. The situation has sparked protests in Kenya, with citizens expressing anger over the perceived hostility and inefficiency in cross-border travel.

This dispute reflects broader tensions in regional relations. Nigeria and Kenya, both members of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), have long struggled with border management and immigration policies. The current crisis underscores the need for improved bilateral cooperation, particularly in facilitating smoother cross-border movement for citizens.

The visa issue has also drawn attention to the challenges of cross-border trade and mobility in East Africa. While both countries have made strides in digital financial systems, the lack of interoperability between their payment infrastructures remains a barrier. This highlights the broader need for regional integration efforts to address both economic and administrative hurdles.
