President William Ruto of Kenya and Russian President Vladimir Putin met in Moscow during the third Russia-Africa Economic and Humanitarian Forum. Ruto emphasized the potential for expanded labor mobility, urging Russia to allow up to 30,000 Kenyan workers to work abroad. The summit, held in Moscow, brought together leaders from across Africa to discuss economic and humanitarian cooperation.

Ruto highlighted the importance of closer economic ties between Kenya and Russia, suggesting that a structured arrangement for Kenyan workers in Russia could create new job opportunities. He spoke during a session where bilateral relations were a key focus. Putin, in turn, praised Elon Musk as a “real genius” and discussed satellite technology and internet coordination with the billionaire.

Putin also addressed African leaders, asserting that Russia is the continent’s best partner, not the “colonial” West. He criticized Western nations for exploiting Africa’s resources and using debt to hinder development. The summit, attended by delegations from 48 African countries, included one-on-one meetings between Putin and African leaders.

The Russia-Africa summit reflects Moscow’s growing influence on the continent, particularly among younger generations. Recent surveys indicate increasing interest in Russia’s role in African development, alongside concerns about foreign influence. As part of its broader strategy, Russia is seeking to deepen economic ties with African nations through initiatives like satellite internet and labor mobility agreements.
