Namibia has hosted the first African nuclear test verification exercise, bringing together international experts and technical teams. The event involved surrogate inspectors selected by signatory states, national technical experts, staff from the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO), and external evaluators.

About 150 tonnes of technical and support equipment were transported to Namibia by sea and air for the exercise. The exercise aims to test verification procedures and enhance the capacity of participating states to detect and analyze nuclear explosions. The CTBTO confirmed the involvement of multiple countries in the exercise, highlighting the importance of regional cooperation in nuclear non-proliferation efforts.

This marks a significant step in strengthening Africa’s role in global nuclear monitoring. The exercise follows years of discussions and preparations to establish a regional verification framework. It also reflects growing international interest in Africa’s contribution to nuclear security and disarmament initiatives. The event underscores the continent’s increasing participation in global scientific and security collaborations.
