Nigeria has sent 10 boxers to compete in the inaugural African Boxing Elite Championships, set to take place in Nairobi, Kenya, from October 15 to 28, 2026. The National Sports Commission (NSC) announced the participation of 19 delegates, including coaches and officials, in a statement released on Monday. The event marks the first time a high-level boxing competition of this scale is held on the continent.
The championships will feature five men’s and five women’s weight categories, with athletes from across Africa expected to participate. The competition aims to elevate the standards of boxing in the region and provide a platform for emerging talent. The NSC emphasized the importance of the event in promoting sports development and fostering regional unity through athletic competition.
This event follows Kenya’s growing role in hosting major continental sporting events. The country has previously hosted the Africa Games and other regional tournaments, reinforcing its position as a key player in African sports. The inclusion of women’s categories reflects a broader push for gender equality in sports across the continent. The championships are also expected to boost Kenya’s reputation as a hub for elite athletic competition in Africa.
