Kalonzo Musyoka, leader of the Wiper Patriotic Front Party, has revived the phrase "Punda amechoka," originally used by Raila Odinga, to express public frustration with President William Ruto's administration. The phrase, meaning "enough is enough," has gained traction in recent weeks as protests grow across Kenya.
Protesters have taken to the streets in major cities, demanding accountability and an end to perceived corruption and mismanagement. The demonstrations, which began in early July, have seen thousands gather in Nairobi, Mombasa, and Kisumu, calling for political reform and an investigation into government officials.
The unrest follows a series of economic challenges, including rising inflation and unemployment, which have fueled public discontent. Kalonzo's use of Odinga's slogan has resonated with many Kenyans, who feel the current government is failing to address their concerns. The protests have also highlighted deepening divisions within the political landscape, with opposition parties urging unity and transparency.
This is not the first time Kenyans have taken to the streets in protest. Similar movements occurred in 2016 and 2017, when public anger over corruption and governance led to widespread demonstrations. However, the current situation is marked by a more organized and sustained campaign, with social media playing a key role in mobilizing supporters.
The government has not yet issued a formal response to the protests, but officials have warned against violence and called for dialogue. As the movement gains momentum, the situation remains closely watched by both domestic and international observers.
