Former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta joined a high-level African Union (AU) peace panel hosted by Rwandan President Paul Kagame in Kigali. The event brought together regional leaders to discuss conflict resolution and stability across the continent. Kenyatta, who previously served as Kenya’s head of state from 2013 to 2022, was part of a delegation led by former Ethiopian President Sahle-Work Zewde. The gathering included former Botswana President Masisi and other regional dignitaries.
The meeting took place as the AU intensifies efforts to mediate disputes in several African nations. Kagame, known for his active role in regional diplomacy, used the platform to emphasize the importance of collective action in maintaining peace. Kenyatta’s participation highlights Kenya’s continued engagement in continental affairs. The event underscored the AU’s commitment to fostering dialogue among member states.
This is not the first time Kenyatta has participated in AU-led initiatives. He previously played a key role in mediating conflicts in South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The current peace panel aims to address ongoing tensions in the Great Lakes region and the Horn of Africa. The AU has been increasingly focused on conflict prevention and resolution as political instability persists in several areas. The meeting in Kigali reflects the growing role of Rwanda in shaping regional security strategies.
