President William Ruto announced a new initiative aimed at fostering youth entrepreneurship in Kenya. The National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (NYOTA) Business Support Programme will invest Ksh5 billion to help young people create businesses and generate employment. Speaking at a press conference on October 8, 2026, Ruto emphasized the shift from traditional job creation to empowering youth to become entrepreneurs. The program is designed to provide resources, training, and financial support to aspiring business owners.
The NYOTA initiative is part of a broader strategy to address youth unemployment and stimulate economic growth. According to government officials, the program will target young entrepreneurs in key sectors such as technology, agriculture, and renewable energy. The funding will be distributed through a competitive selection process to ensure maximum impact. The government has also partnered with private sector organizations to provide mentorship and market access for participants.
This move comes as Kenya faces rising youth unemployment rates, with over 60% of young people in the labor force lacking stable employment. Ruto has previously highlighted the importance of youth empowerment as a driver of national development. The NYOTA program is expected to launch in early 2027, with the first cohort of participants selected by mid-2027. The initiative reflects a growing focus on innovation and self-reliance in Kenya’s economic policies.
