Kenyans' medical professionals union has appointed its deputy secretary general to a key pension fund board. Dr Dennis Miskellah, deputy secretary general of the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union, has been named to the Local Authorities Provident Fund (LAPFUND) Board of Trustees. The appointment, effective immediately, is for a three-year term.
The National Treasury Cabinet Secretary, John Mbadi Ng’ongo, announced the appointment through Gazette Notice No. 15978, dated October 9, 2026. The notice confirms Miskellah's role on the board, which oversees pension contributions and benefits for public sector workers.
LAPFUND serves as a retirement savings mechanism for local government employees. The board’s responsibilities include managing funds, ensuring compliance with regulations, and advising on policy matters. Miskellah’s inclusion on the board marks a shift toward greater representation of medical professionals in financial oversight.
This appointment follows recent reforms aimed at improving transparency and accountability in public sector pensions. The move reflects broader efforts to align union leadership with institutional governance structures. Miskellah’s role will involve participating in strategic decisions and policy reviews affecting pension fund operations.
The decision underscores the growing influence of professional unions in shaping public sector financial policies. It also highlights ongoing efforts to enhance collaboration between regulatory bodies and industry representatives.
