Kenya Railways has launched a new vehicle transportation service on the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), aiming to move up to 700 vehicles monthly. The service began with the successful transport of 24 vehicles from Mombasa to Nairobi.

The inaugural consignment arrived at the Nairobi Inland Container Depot on Friday. Kenya Railways Managing Director Philip Mainga stated the service marks a new chapter for the railway network. The route includes a connection to Naivasha, expanding freight options for businesses.

The SGR, a key infrastructure project, now offers dedicated freight services for vehicles. This initiative aims to reduce road congestion and improve logistics efficiency. The service is part of broader efforts to enhance Kenya’s transportation capabilities.

The new service follows the completion of the SGR’s main line, which connects Mombasa to Nairobi. It is designed to support economic growth by facilitating smoother movement of goods. The railway company plans to increase capacity as demand grows.

This development reflects Kenya’s push to modernize its transport sector. The SGR project has been a major focus for improving trade and connectivity across the country. The vehicle freight service is expected to benefit both local and international businesses.
