Demonstrators in Nairobi blocked major roads on Monday as they protested against rising fuel prices. The protests, which began in the early morning, saw hundreds of people gathering near the city’s main highways. The demonstrators demanded government intervention to stabilize fuel prices, which have surged by over 30% in the past three months.
The unrest started in the Eastleigh area, a neighborhood known for political activism. Police reported that the crowd grew to several thousand before authorities deployed water cannons and tear gas to disperse the protesters. At least 12 people were injured, though no fatalities were reported. The government has not yet responded to the demands, but officials have warned of legal consequences for those involved in the demonstrations.
Fuel prices in Kenya have been a growing concern for months. The increase follows a series of economic challenges, including inflation and currency devaluation. Local leaders have called for urgent measures to protect citizens from the rising cost of living. This latest wave of protests marks the most significant escalation in the ongoing fuel price crisis.
