Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has announced himself as President William Ruto’s primary political opponent in the 2027 general elections. Speaking at a Thanksgiving service, Kalonzo emphasized his experience, integrity, and ability to deliver results, positioning himself as a credible alternative to Ruto.
Kalonzo’s declaration comes amid growing tensions within Kenya’s political landscape. He is set to hold separate political rallies in the Mt Kenya region, a move that highlights divisions within the opposition. These rallies are expected to draw attention to his campaign, contrasting with Ruto’s recent public praise of Kalonzo.
Ruto, during a visit to Ukambani, referred to Kalonzo as “my friend” and commended his honesty. This gesture occurred as Ruto launched a KSh1.7 billion water project in Machakos, a gesture seen as both a political and infrastructural move ahead of the 2027 elections.
The rivalry between Kalonzo and Ruto reflects broader political dynamics in Kenya. Both leaders are vying for public support, with Kalonzo leveraging his past roles and Ruto focusing on development initiatives. The upcoming elections are expected to be highly competitive, with both leaders seeking to consolidate their positions.
Kalonzo’s challenge to Ruto marks a significant shift in Kenya’s political narrative. As the 2027 elections approach, the competition between the two leaders is likely to intensify, shaping the country’s political future.
