Political analyst Herman Manyora has warned Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka to be cautious about the recent meeting between former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna. The meeting, held at Gachagua’s Wamunyoro residence, could impact Kalonzo’s ambitions to lead the United Opposition in the 2027 presidential race.
Kalonzo Musyoka has publicly declared himself President William Ruto’s main political rival in the run-up to the 2027 General Election. Speaking at a Thanksgiving service, he emphasized his experience, integrity, and ability to deliver results as key qualifications for leadership. His challenge to Ruto comes amid growing political tensions ahead of the upcoming elections.
Ruto has recently shown a more conciliatory tone toward Kalonzo, calling him “my friend” during a visit to Ukambani. This gesture occurred as Ruto commissioned a KSh1.7 billion Machakos water project, highlighting efforts to strengthen his political base. The warmer interaction between the two leaders contrasts with earlier tensions, but Kalonzo’s public challenge suggests a strategic move to position himself as a viable alternative in the 2027 race.
The political landscape in Kenya remains highly competitive, with both leaders vying for influence ahead of the next presidential election. Analysts suggest that Kalonzo’s challenge to Ruto is part of a broader strategy to consolidate support within the opposition ranks.
