The Federation of Kenyan Football (FKF) Special General Meeting (SGM) in Meru was abruptly halted by the Rapid Deployment Unit (RDU) on Tuesday. The intervention, which involved teargas, disrupted proceedings and led to a condemnation from the FKF leadership.

The meeting, convened by members of the FKF General Assembly, was intended to address ongoing leadership disputes within the federation. President Hussein Mohammed and vice-president McDonald Mariga were central figures in the conflict. Mariga, who had fallen out with Mohammed following the 2025 CHAN finals, was among those removed from the National Executive Committee (NEC) during the meeting.

The RDU’s presence at the venue escalated tensions, with teargas deployed before the meeting began. This forced the event to be postponed, and the FKF expressed strong disapproval of the security forces’ actions. The incident has raised concerns about the handling of internal federation matters by external security entities.

This is not the first time the FKF has faced internal strife. The leadership dispute between Mohammed and Mariga has been ongoing, with Mariga’s removal from the NEC marking a significant shift in the federation’s governance. The RDU’s involvement has further complicated the situation, highlighting the need for clearer protocols in handling such sensitive political gatherings.
