Nedbank has acquired a 66% controlling stake in the Kenyan financial services group NCBA, marking a significant expansion of its African banking presence. The deal, announced by NCBA, includes a leadership reshuffle and governance changes to align with Nedbank’s strategic direction.

Eligible NCBA shareholders received 43.63 million newly issued Nedbank shares, granting them an 8.37% stake in the South African bank. Shareholders also received KSh23.2 billion in cash payments as part of the transaction. The acquisition is part of Nedbank’s broader strategy to strengthen its footprint across the continent.

This move follows a growing trend of cross-border banking partnerships in Africa, with South African financial institutions increasingly investing in regional markets. The acquisition is expected to enhance operational synergies and improve service delivery for customers in both countries.

The deal reflects the deepening financial ties between Kenya and South Africa, with Kenyan investors gaining a direct stake in a major South African bank. It also underscores the role of African banks in shaping the continent’s financial landscape.

The partnership is seen as a step toward greater regional integration, with both institutions aiming to leverage their combined expertise to drive growth and stability in the African banking sector.
