Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has officially left the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) to join the opposition Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), ahead of the 2027 general elections. The move was confirmed during a meeting at ODM headquarters in Nairobi, as Sakaja prepares to defend his seat in the upcoming polls.
Sakaja’s defection has drawn criticism from UDA members, including Embakasi North MP James Gakuya, who described the party as a “complete shell” and warned that President William Ruto’s party may face strong resistance in Nairobi. Gakuya claimed that UDA would struggle to make an impact in the capital, suggesting that Sakaja’s departure could weaken the party’s position.
Ronald Karauri, a rival candidate from ODM, accused Sakaja of joining the party to divert attention from his own political record. Karauri called the move a “monumental failure,” implying that Sakaja’s decision is aimed at influencing voter behavior in Nairobi.
Sakaja’s switch marks a significant shift in the political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections, with implications for both UDA and ODM in the capital. The decision comes after months of speculation about Sakaja’s potential departure from UDA, with the governor hinting at the move earlier this year.
This development adds to the growing political tensions in Nairobi ahead of the 2027 polls, as key figures realign their positions in the race for power.
