Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has officially left the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and joined the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM). The decision comes as he prepares to seek re-election in 2027. Sakaja made the move at ODM headquarters in Nairobi, following hints he had previously given about changing parties.

Sakaja’s departure marks a significant shift in Kenyan political dynamics. The move was welcomed by ODM leader Raila Odinga, who extended an invitation for Sakaja to join the party. Simba Arati, a senior ODM figure, expressed support for Sakaja’s decision, which is seen as a strategic move to strengthen his position ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The political realignment follows growing tensions between ODM and UDA over their proposed partnership. Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi, who supports President William Ruto, has emphasized that Ruto’s policies benefit all Kenyans, not just the Luo community. This stance has fueled debates within ODM about the terms of its alliance with UDA. Sakaja’s switch is viewed as a key development in shaping the political landscape ahead of the upcoming elections.
