Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has officially switched political parties, leaving the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) for the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), as he prepares to run for re-election in 2027. The move was confirmed during a meeting at ODM headquarters in Nairobi. Sakaja had previously hinted at his intention to change parties, citing the need to better position himself for the upcoming polls.

Sakaja’s defection has drawn criticism from former allies. Ronald Karauri, a local politician, accused Sakaja of using the party switch as a strategy to divert attention from his political record. Karauri described the move as a “monumental failure,” suggesting it reflects a lack of confidence in Sakaja’s ability to win re-election through his current party.

Despite the backlash, Sakaja’s supporters, including West Mugirango Member of Parliament Steve Mogaka, remain optimistic. Mogaka stated that Sakaja still has a strong chance of winning the governor’s seat in 2027, even amid internal party challenges. He emphasized that Sakaja’s leadership and governance record continue to resonate with voters.

Sakaja’s decision to switch parties comes amid growing political tensions within the UDA. His departure marks a significant shift in Nairobi’s political landscape, with implications for the 2027 elections. The move also highlights the competitive nature of the race for Nairobi governor, as candidates seek to consolidate support ahead of the polls.
