The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has issued a formal tax notice to former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko, demanding payment of Sh623.4 million in unpaid taxes. The amount includes Sh308.9 million in principal tax, Sh15.8 million in penalties, and Sh298.7 million in interest.
The notice was issued by KRA, which has directed Sonko to settle the outstanding arrears. The total sum represents a significant financial obligation, with interest and penalties accumulating over time. The agency has taken formal steps to recover the debt, indicating a legal process may be initiated if the payment is not made.
Mike Sonko, who previously served as governor of Nairobi, is now being pursued for unpaid taxes. This action follows previous reports of tax evasion allegations against him. The KRA’s move highlights the authority’s efforts to enforce tax compliance, even against former public officials. The case underscores the ongoing challenges in ensuring tax collection and accountability in the region.
