Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka has declared himself President William Ruto’s main political rival ahead of the 2027 General Election. Speaking at a Thanksgiving service, Kalonzo emphasized his experience, integrity, and ability to deliver results, positioning himself as a credible alternative to Ruto.
Kalonzo’s declaration comes amid growing tensions between opposition leaders. While he has maintained a close relationship with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, questions have arisen about the unity of the opposition. In a recent statement on his X account, Kalonzo defended his friendship with Gachagua, stating that their bond remains strong despite the political challenges.
President Ruto, meanwhile, has shown signs of warming to Kalonzo. During a visit to Ukambani, Ruto referred to Kalonzo as “my friend” and praised his honesty. This gesture occurred as Ruto commissioned a KSh1.7 billion water project in Machakos, a move seen as an attempt to strengthen his political standing ahead of the 2027 elections.
The 2027 General Election is shaping up as a key contest for Kenya’s political future. With Kalonzo positioning himself as Ruto’s primary challenger, the race is expected to intensify in the coming months. Both leaders are vying for public support, with their interactions reflecting the evolving dynamics of Kenya’s political landscape.
