Kenya's President William Ruto praised Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote for his $16 billion oil refinery project in Lamu, highlighting its potential to transform the region's economy. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on Wednesday, marking a major step in Kenya's industrial development. Dangote, who has previously invested in Nigeria, chose Lamu over Mombasa and Tanga for the refinery, citing strategic and economic advantages.

The project, expected to take 40 months to complete, will create thousands of jobs and train over 1,000 local workers. It will also contribute to Kenya's energy independence and support regional economic growth. Ruto emphasized that the refinery represents more than just infrastructure, calling it a symbol of industrial ambition.

Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni expressed support for the Lamu refinery but noted concerns over the stalled Tanga project in Tanzania. He stated that Uganda will first assess the Tanga situation before committing to the Lamu project. Despite these concerns, the Lamu refinery remains a key focus for regional development.

The refinery is expected to significantly boost Kenya's energy sector and enhance its industrial capacity. It also aligns with broader African efforts to reduce reliance on foreign oil and promote self-sufficiency. The project has drawn attention for its scale and potential impact on employment and economic growth in the region.
