Police in Meru, Kenya, detained 12 drivers during a crackdown on drink-driving, as the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) intensified road safety operations. The arrests were part of an inter-agency initiative to enforce traffic laws and enhance road safety. Officers conducted random checks and identified drivers with alcohol in their systems.

The operation, coordinated by NTSA, involved collaboration with local police and other agencies. Drivers were stopped at various checkpoints and subjected to breathalyzer tests. Those found to have alcohol levels above the legal limit were arrested. The campaign aims to reduce road accidents linked to impaired driving.

This is the third such operation in the region this month. Previous campaigns in Nairobi and Mombasa also resulted in multiple arrests. NTSA has been increasing efforts to address road safety concerns, citing a rise in traffic-related incidents. The current operation is expected to continue for the next two weeks, with more checkpoints planned in other areas.
