During a night-time road safety operation in Meru County, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) arrested 12 drivers. Eight of those arrested failed breathalyser tests, with some recording blood alcohol concentration levels far above the legal limit. The operation was part of a targeted crackdown on drink-driving ahead of the festive season.

The NTSA impounded the vehicles of all 12 drivers during the operation. The agency emphasized that the arrests were the result of an inter-agency road safety compliance effort aimed at enforcing traffic regulations and improving road safety. The operation followed a series of similar campaigns in other regions of Kenya.

This is the third such operation in Meru this year, following two previous road safety drives that resulted in the seizure of multiple vehicles and the issuance of fines to drivers. The NTSA has been increasing its focus on drink-driving enforcement in preparation for the busy holiday period, which typically sees a rise in traffic accidents. The legal limit for blood alcohol concentration in Kenya is 0.05 grams per 210 liters of breath, but some drivers tested well above this threshold.
