President William Ruto has pledged government support for Vision 2060, a long-term development plan aimed at shaping Kenya’s future through citizen-driven initiatives. Speaking at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre in Nairobi on August 12, 2026, Ruto emphasized that resources will be made available to ensure the plan reflects the needs and aspirations of Kenyans. His remarks came during a national conversation event titled "Beyond 2030," which brought together over 5,000 delegates from all 47 counties.
Kisumu Governor Prof. Anyang Nyong’o urged Kenyans not to connect discussions on Vision 2060 with the upcoming general elections, which are scheduled for early 2027. Nyong’o stressed that long-term development goals should remain independent of political cycles. His comments highlight growing concerns about the political implications of national planning processes.
The debate over Vision 2060 reflects broader tensions between governance and public engagement in Kenya. While Ruto’s vision emphasizes inclusivity, critics argue that political interests may still influence the direction of the plan. As the country moves toward implementing its long-term goals, the balance between political strategy and citizen participation remains a key challenge.
