Lions Eye Hospital in Eastleigh celebrated its first anniversary by highlighting its role in providing accessible eye care. Yusuf Hassan, a local resident, recounted how his father’s near-blindness due to untreated cataracts changed his perspective on healthcare. His father, who could not afford treatment, lost most of his vision, prompting Yusuf to advocate for affordable eye care.
The hospital, established to serve the community, has treated over 1,200 patients in its first year. It offers free or subsidized services, including cataract surgery and glaucoma treatment. Local doctors and volunteers work alongside international partners to ensure quality care.
Eastleigh, a rapidly growing area in Kenya’s Nairobi County, has seen rising cases of preventable blindness. Many residents, especially the elderly and low-income families, lack access to regular eye check-ups. The hospital’s initiative aims to bridge this gap.
The hospital’s success has sparked discussions about expanding similar services across Kenya. Health officials note that early detection and treatment can prevent irreversible vision loss. Yusuf Hassan remains optimistic about the hospital’s future, believing it can inspire more community-driven healthcare solutions.
