Lions Eye Hospital in Eastleigh celebrated its first anniversary by highlighting its role in providing free eye care to the community. The hospital, located in the Kenyan town of Eastleigh, has been operating for a year with a focus on making eye treatment accessible to all.
Yusuf Hassan, a local resident, recounted how his father’s near-blindness due to untreated cataracts changed his perspective on healthcare. “My father’s experience shaped my belief that eye care should not be a privilege,” Hassan said. His father, who had to rely on donations for treatment, was eventually helped by the hospital.
The hospital has treated over 1,200 patients in its first year, offering services such as cataract surgery, glaucoma management, and routine check-ups. All services are provided free of charge, funded by donations and partnerships with local and international organizations.
Eastleigh, a rapidly growing area in Nairobi, has seen an increase in eye-related issues due to limited access to healthcare. The hospital was established to address this gap, offering a dedicated space for eye care that is otherwise scarce in the region.
The initiative has been praised by local leaders and health officials for improving public health outcomes. “This hospital is a beacon of hope for many who would otherwise go untreated,” said a local health officer. The hospital continues to expand its services and plans to introduce more specialized care in the coming months.
