Women senators in Kenya have called for alternatives to jail for minor offenses, highlighting the growing prison population and the need for rehabilitation. During a visit to Malindi Women’s Prison in Kilifi County, senators met with inmates and officials to discuss the issue. The visit was part of a broader Senate Mashinani tour aimed at addressing systemic challenges within the justice system.
The Kenya Women Senators Association (KEWOSA) urged county governments to expand rehabilitation programs, emphasizing education, vocational training, and economic opportunities for women in custody. The senators, led by Nominated Senator Catherine Muma, stressed the importance of reducing overcrowding and offering non-custodial options for non-violent crimes.
The discussion also focused on improving conditions for female inmates and ensuring access to essential services. The visit underscored the association’s commitment to reforming the justice system to better support women and reduce the strain on prison facilities. The proposed measures aim to align with international standards on human rights and criminal justice reform.
