The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has expanded voter registration for Kenyans living abroad to 26 countries ahead of the 2027 general elections. This move aims to ensure that overseas Kenyans can exercise their right to vote, regardless of their residency status. IEBC chairman Erastus Ethekon emphasized that the constitutional right to participate in elections remains intact for Kenyans residing outside the country.
The expansion includes countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada, where significant Kenyan diaspora communities are located. The process involves verifying the identity and eligibility of overseas voters through digital means. This initiative is part of broader efforts to modernize the electoral process and increase voter participation.
The IEBC has also introduced online registration platforms to make the process more accessible. Officials noted that the goal is to ensure that all Kenyans, regardless of where they live, have equal opportunities to engage in the democratic process. The 2027 elections are expected to see increased participation from the diaspora, reflecting growing awareness of their voting rights.
