Eritrea has announced the termination of its diplomatic relations with Ethiopia following the expulsion of 10 Eritrean diplomats from Addis Ababa. The move comes as a direct response to Ethiopia’s decision to close its embassy in Asmara and declare the diplomats persona non grata. Eritrea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs accused Ethiopia of pursuing hostile actions, rejecting the country’s claims against it.
Ethiopia’s decision to expel the diplomats was part of a tit-for-tat diplomatic escalation. The Ethiopian government cited Eritrea’s alleged hostile acts as the reason for the expulsions. In turn, Eritrea accused Ethiopia of engaging in aggressive behavior, framing the closure of the embassy as retaliation. The situation has deepened the already strained relationship between the two neighboring nations.
The diplomatic rift follows months of rising tensions between Eritrea and Ethiopia. Both countries have accused each other of border disputes and interference in internal affairs. The current crisis marks a significant escalation in their long-standing conflict, with both sides taking concrete steps to cut ties. The closure of the Ethiopian embassy in Asmara and the expulsion of Eritrean diplomats signal a breakdown in diplomatic communication. The situation remains unresolved, with no immediate indication of a return to formal diplomatic channels.
