A road accident near Salama on the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway killed 17 pilgrims traveling to Subukia for National Prayer Day. The crash occurred on Saturday, October 3, shortly after midnight. A lorry lost control due to failed brakes and collided with several vehicles, including a 14-seater matatu. The victims were members of the St Matthias Mulumba Catholic Church in Mombasa.
The incident involved a group of pilgrims en route to the National Shrine in Subukia, Nakuru County. The lorry’s loss of control led to a collision that resulted in multiple fatalities. Local authorities confirmed the number of deaths as 17. The victims were traveling in a convoy, part of a religious pilgrimage.
This is the second major road accident in the region this month. Previous incidents have highlighted safety concerns on the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway, a critical route for both commercial and passenger traffic. The crash has prompted calls for improved road safety measures and vehicle maintenance checks. The government is expected to review transport regulations in the wake of the tragedy.
