A multi-vehicle road crash near Salama, 90 kilometers southeast of Nairobi, Kenya, killed at least 17 people, mostly Catholic pilgrims, according to local media. The incident occurred on a highway connecting Nairobi to Mombasa. The victims were members of the St. Mathias Mulumba Catholic Church, Mikindani Parish, en route to the National Shrine in Subukia for the National Prayer Day.
The Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary, Davis Chirchir, expressed condolences for the victims and confirmed the government is conducting an investigation into the crash. The crash reportedly involved several vehicles, though the exact number and cause remain under review. Emergency services responded quickly to the scene, but the severity of the accident led to multiple fatalities.
This is the second major road accident in the region this month, raising concerns about road safety in Kenya. The Nairobi-Mombasa Highway, a key route for both commercial and religious travel, has seen several incidents in recent years. Authorities have previously called for improved infrastructure and stricter enforcement of traffic laws to reduce such tragedies. The investigation into this crash is expected to provide further insight into the challenges facing road safety in the area.
